The Music Students’ Service League (MSSL) of the Music Teachers’ Association of California–West Los Angeles (MTAC-WLA) is a student-run organization that uses the power of music to serve our community. Our initiatives include performances at nursing homes, conducting Practice-a-thons to fundraise for music programs, and organizing MTAC–WLA’s Daniel Pearl World Music Days Concerts. From Harmony Project in Los Angeles to the Orlando West Brass Band in South Africa, we dedicate ourselves to supporting music education, particularly for students in marginalized communities.
Join us in our mission to serve Los Angeles!

"As the Neighborhood Music School continued to grow, so did our need for scholarships! The school benefited from the outreach and support of a Practice-a-thon one spring... A number of students from the Westside visited and attended one of the student recitals, getting perspective on the families served by the school. The Neighborhood Music School also appreciated being invited to participate in the auditions for the Daniel Pearl Concert. The students who had the opportunity to perform found the experience very inspiring. A number of our students attended the most recent concert and were amazed at the level of accomplishment of the young artists who participated. "
Wendy Kikkert, Former Administrator of Neighborhood Music School, Los Angeles
"The Music Students' Service League West-LA has been a terrific partner for Harmony Project. MSSL students raised funds for music scholarships for low-income Harmony Project students through practice-a-thons. They raised enough to purchase two smaller-size string basses for Harmony Project to enable younger students to learn to play the bass and to help fill out one of our string orchestras. MSSL students have also invited Harmony Project students to perform in recitals with them. We deeply value and appreciate our talented and caring MSSL partners and the dedicated teachers who work with them."
Dr. Margaret Martin, Harmony Project Founder
"Being part of the MSSL family has been a great community service experience which has shaped both of my kids into more independent, empathetic, and mature young adults. The advisers are passionate and dedicated to guiding the kids through the planning a variety of events. The concerted efforts of the energetic and talented students have made each and every concert successful. It has been amazing to see how they transformed their solo performances into a powerful tool to make an impact on the community."

"I have only fond memories of my time as a member, and later president, of MSSL. My three years of experience on MSSL taught me invaluable life lessons, from learning how to plan an event like the Daniel Pearl Concert from start to finish to working with a group of talented individuals of varied ages and backgrounds. Beyond that, I’m happy to have found a community where I had the opportunity to share my passion for music with others and give back to the community."
Ashley Wu, MSSL President 2012
